Green Woodworking - Build a Ladderback Footstool from a Tree - September 12-13, 2020
In ‘green woodworking’ we use hand tools to transform raw wood straight from the log into all sorts of useful items including agricultural tools, spoons, chairs and stools, bowls, and even cabinetry. Because we work with wood by splitting it out from a log, green woodworking demands a keen understanding of the way trees grow and wood forms so that we may best utilize wood's strengths and weaknesses. This is a fantastic introduction to woodworking for the complete beginner and a valuable new skill to add to the season’s craftsperson’s toolkit.
In this 2 day workshop, we’ll learn the fundamentals of green woodworking while building a lightweight, remarkably durable ladderback footstool straight from a raw oak log. After ‘riving’ (splitting) out rough parts, we’ll use a draw knife and shaving horse to bring our parts to their finished dimensions. We’ll then assemble the individual parts, creating precision joints that account for wood’s movement over time. And with whatever time remains, students will complete their project by weaving a beautiful seat.
All tools and devices will be provided for this workshop, and no prior woodworking experience necessary. This weekend class will run from 10am to 5pm rain or shine. Sliding scale weekend tuition $250-300, plus additional $30-50 materials fee. Limited work trade available. This course is limited to 8 participants max to ensure each student has access their own tools to complete their project.
